AIO for Secretly Planning to Leave My Boyfriend After I Found Him Asking Another Girl Out?

AIO for Secretly Planning to Leave My Boyfriend After I Found Him Asking Another Girl Out?

For the past three years, I genuinely believed that my boyfriend and I were building a future together. We had talked about marriage, living together permanently, traveling, and even what kind of home we wanted someday. I never thought of our relationship as something temporary. I trusted him completely, and because of that trust, I never felt the need to constantly check his phone or question where he was. We had our disagreements like any couple, but I always believed that underneath everything, there was loyalty and respect. That changed a few weeks ago when I accidentally discovered a conversation between him and another woman. I wasn’t intentionally snooping through his phone. He had left it on the kitchen counter while he was showering, and a message appeared on the screen. I normally would have ignored it, but I saw enough of the preview to realize it wasn’t an ordinary conversation. The message was from a woman I didn’t recognize, and my boyfriend had apparently been asking her if she wanted to go out with him. My heart dropped immediately. I opened the conversation because I needed to know whether I was misunderstanding what I had seen, and unfortunately, I wasn’t. He had been flirting with her, complimenting her appearance, and eventually asking if she was free to meet him for drinks. What hurt the most wasn’t just the invitation itself. It was the realization that he was behaving like a single man while still coming home to me every night and talking about our future.

I didn’t confront him immediately because I was completely overwhelmed. Part of me wanted to wake him up and demand an explanation, while another part of me was terrified of what I might hear. I spent the entire night thinking about our relationship and wondering how long this had been happening. I started replaying conversations from the previous few months that I had previously ignored. There had been times when he suddenly became protective of his phone, started taking longer to respond to my messages, or seemed emotionally distant without giving me a clear reason. Whenever I asked if something was wrong, he would tell me that he was stressed or tired. I believed him because I had no reason to think otherwise. Now, those little moments looked completely different. I began wondering whether this woman was the first person he had contacted or simply the first person I had discovered. I also started questioning whether he had already cheated physically or whether he was simply testing the waters before doing something worse. The uncertainty was almost unbearable. I realized that confronting him immediately might lead to him deleting messages, minimizing what happened, or convincing me that I was overreacting. So instead of starting an emotional argument, I decided to step back and think carefully about what I wanted to do.

The next few days were incredibly difficult because I had to pretend that everything was normal. My boyfriend continued behaving as though nothing had happened. He kissed me goodbye before work, asked me what I wanted for dinner, and talked casually about plans for the weekend. Meanwhile, I was sitting across from him knowing that he had recently asked another woman out. I felt like I was living two completely different realities at the same time. I didn’t want to become someone who secretly monitored every movement of her partner, but I also didn’t feel comfortable pretending that I trusted him completely anymore. I eventually looked at some of the other messages and found enough information to convince myself that this wasn’t an innocent misunderstanding. There were conversations where he made comments about how attractive other women were, and there were indications that he had been considering meeting someone outside our relationship. I never found proof that he had physically cheated, but for me, the emotional betrayal was already serious enough. Asking another woman out while being in a committed relationship wasn’t something I could simply forget. Instead of confronting him immediately, I started quietly preparing myself to leave. I looked at my finances, considered where I could stay, and thought about how to separate our belongings and responsibilities without creating unnecessary chaos.

The more I thought about leaving, the more conflicted I became. I still loved him, which made everything much harder. If I had stopped caring about him, walking away would have been simple. But I hadn’t stopped caring. I still remembered the good moments we had shared and the person I thought he was when we first met. I remembered how he supported me during difficult times, how we celebrated important milestones together, and how certain he seemed about our future. Part of me desperately wanted to believe that there was some explanation that could make everything okay. Maybe he had made a stupid mistake. Maybe he had been unhappy and didn’t know how to communicate it. Maybe he never intended to meet the woman. But then another part of me kept asking the obvious question: Why was he asking her out in the first place? Even if nothing physical happened, he had already crossed a boundary. He didn’t accidentally send her a friendly message. He intentionally flirted with her and invited her to meet privately. That was a decision. I eventually realized that I didn’t need to prove that he had cheated physically before I was allowed to decide that the relationship was no longer right for me.

I began quietly making arrangements for my future without telling him what I was doing. I moved some of my important belongings to a safe place and made sure I had enough money to support myself if we separated. I also started thinking about the conversation I would eventually have with him. I knew I didn’t want to scream, insult him, or create a dramatic scene. I wanted to be calm and direct. At the same time, I started feeling guilty about secretly planning everything. I wondered whether I was becoming just as dishonest as he was by hiding my intentions from him. That question is what eventually led me to ask whether I was doing something wrong. My boyfriend had made a choice that damaged our relationship, but I was now making plans behind his back too. The difference, at least in my mind, was that I wasn’t secretly pursuing another person. I was protecting myself and preparing to leave a relationship that I no longer felt safe trusting. Still, I couldn’t completely shake the feeling that I should have confronted him immediately rather than quietly preparing my exit.

Eventually, I decided that I couldn’t continue pretending forever. I sat down with him and told him that I knew about the messages. His reaction was almost exactly what I had feared. At first, he tried to explain that it was “just talking” and that he never actually went on a date with her. He said I was making something bigger than it was and insisted that asking someone for drinks didn’t necessarily mean he planned to cheat. But I reminded him that the issue wasn’t whether he had physically cheated. The issue was that he was in a committed relationship with me while intentionally trying to arrange a romantic meeting with another woman. When I asked why he had done it, he didn’t have a convincing answer. Eventually, he admitted that he had been feeling uncertain about our relationship and had wanted to see whether he still had “options.” Hearing that sentence completely changed the way I looked at him. He wasn’t accidentally confused about our relationship. He had consciously decided to explore another possibility while keeping me as his partner. He apologized and asked me not to throw away three years because of one mistake. But to me, the problem wasn’t only the message. It was the fact that he had been willing to risk our entire relationship without even talking to me about his doubts.

Now I’m left wondering whether I handled everything the wrong way. Some people might say that I should have confronted him the moment I discovered the messages instead of secretly planning my departure. Others might argue that once someone violates your trust, you have every right to quietly protect yourself before ending the relationship. I don’t know if I will ultimately leave immediately or give him a chance to rebuild the trust he destroyed, but I know that things can never simply return to the way they were. I spent years believing that we were working toward the same future, and now I’m questioning whether we were ever looking in the same direction. Maybe secretly preparing to leave was unfair, but I also feel that I needed time to process the betrayal without being pressured into making an emotional decision. I didn’t plan to punish him or hurt him. I planned because I needed to know that, if I chose to walk away, I would be okay on my own. So now I’m asking: AITA for secretly planning to leave my boyfriend after discovering that he was asking another girl out, even though he says it was only a mistake and nothing actually happened?

AIO for hiding my true intentions to my bf after he asked a girl out?

The story is quite large so hope that I can get the best out here…

Me and my boyfriend are together for 1 year now (we just had our anniversary on the 17) … we moved in together quite early in the relationship (a month in or so). I met this girl from the beginning because she is a regular customer at my bf smoke shop plus they already know each other from high school (or that’s what I know).

Since the beginning I noticed that he had numbers on his phone from some customers that ask him for products and stuff (nothing wrong with that) the problem started when she texted my bf when he was not on schedule (he works 12h schedules 7 days a week) and she always asked if he was there or so the thing is I didn’t like the fact that she kept asking for him even on times that he told her that he is not working etc… the thing is that I told him that I didn’t not like that and apparently he spoke to her and the issue was resolved.

Fast forward to a conflict that I had with my bf that was so bad and intense that I had to leave the house and ended up staying the night with my best friend and her husband (my bf knows them btw) but since my bf is a jealous person (to the point of having to know every thing I do with who and what) that day it hit him really hard that I spend the night out but I really needed to take a break from all that was happening with us (it became so bad that he even threatened to throw a my stuff away and by the time I was back to pick up clothes he had already bagged some of my clothes)

Last week on Wednesday… I went through his phone (something that I used to do at the beginning because we had a situation with his ex, but then I promised myself to stop it since it was consuming me and I didn’t want to became a toxic person for the sake of our relationship but this time something was calling me) and noticed that he had a contact that I hadn’t seen before and it was named “morenita”, when I asked him who that was he told me that it was the girl that always say hi to me and is nice to me (at this point I did had a nice and polite relationship with this girl that I mentioned before since she was a regular customer and I was most of the time at the store with my bf) but something was not right and my gut feeling was killing me so when he fell asleep I went on and opened up the chat scrolled up and I saw it… exactly one week after our fight he asked her if she had time to hang out with him… and she said yes right away… and I know for a fact that they chilled together in the store while I was at home coming back from my new job and trying to stay calm since we were having an argument the same day (I checked dates and times and literally he was saying sorry to me while asking her out at the same time).

So he saw that I was reading his phone and woke up right away… he tried to tell me that is nothing and just lay down and sleep with him but the damage was done, he apologized then tried to turn it on me saying that if I didn’t checked the dates it was the same day that the big fight happened and I was not home, then he told me that they never hang out or anything and then he apologized and said that it was a mistake and that it will never happen again.

(he offered to delete her number and even tell her that she can’t go to the store anymore but I told him to not do that since she is a customer there… yesterday she came to the store but it was not herself and she came all dolled up which is unusual and say hi to me with a guilty face and next thing I know she was just walking around like she was on the phone and then disappeared without saying bye… again unusual)

Since then I’ve been trying to keep the peace at home but I can’t find it… I can’t trust anything that comes out of him and my head is wrapped around the fact that I feel replaceable… I’ve been telling him that I’m not leaving, that he has to show me some change for me to believe him but I’m already planning on moving out of his moms house to my old room that is still available…

I feel terrible doing this because part of me wants to tell him the truth but the other part is worried of what would he do if he knows my real intentions… my heart keeps telling me to give him another chance that he will change and we will be happy but at the same time I keep remembering all the times that he had said he will never do something like that… the times we had a bad argument because of his own jealousy and to end up doing this… idk what to do anymore I need some judgement this is been so painful that I think I might go crazy my family and friends keep asking me why I came back and what I’m still doing here… idk what to do what to think anymore… but AITAH for hiding my true intentions?

Edit: I see in the comments that the moving in situation got kinda confused… so first our ages he’s 32 I’m 26, after a month in HE moved in to my room and we lived there for almost 4/5 months then we had to move out of the apartment because we had issues with one of my roommates that’s when we decided to move to his moms house and it was supposed to be temporary until we found an apartment for both of us.

Hope this clarified that part, and thank you for all the comments and support, this post was made a few days ago but I couldn’t post it on the original site I wanted and today I came to this sub and looking at everything that has happened I’m having the conversation today and I will be honest and just tell him that I’m done. Again thank you for all the eye openers that everyone has given me, God bless y’all.

I Thought We Were Building a Future Together

For three years, I believed my boyfriend and I were building a life together. We had been through enough experiences that I thought we understood each other better than anyone else. We had talked about our future, our careers, where we might eventually live, and even the possibility of getting married someday. I never believed our relationship was perfect, but I believed it was honest. Like every couple, we had arguments and disagreements, but I always thought there was a basic level of loyalty between us that neither of us would cross. I trusted him enough that I never felt the need to check his phone or investigate his conversations. Looking back, that trust is probably one of the reasons what happened hurt so much. I wasn’t expecting to discover anything because I genuinely believed there was nothing to discover.

Everything changed a few weeks ago when I accidentally saw a message on his phone. He had left his phone on the kitchen counter while he went to take a shower, and I happened to be standing nearby when the notification appeared. Normally, I wouldn’t have paid attention to it, but the preview contained words that immediately caught my attention. It was from a woman I didn’t recognize, and the message seemed flirtatious. I knew I probably should have walked away, but something about the situation made me uncomfortable. I picked up the phone and looked at the conversation. I wasn’t prepared for what I saw. My boyfriend had been talking to this woman and had eventually asked her if she wanted to go out with him for drinks. It wasn’t a casual invitation between friends. The conversation had a romantic and flirtatious tone, and there were several messages that made it clear he was interested in her.

At first, I tried to convince myself that there had to be some kind of explanation. Maybe I was misunderstanding the conversation. Maybe she was an old friend. Maybe they had some history that I didn’t know about. I kept scrolling because I wanted to understand the context before jumping to conclusions. Unfortunately, the more I read, the worse it became. He had complimented her appearance, asked about her relationship status, and eventually suggested that they meet without mentioning that he had a girlfriend. There was nothing in the conversation that suggested he was trying to introduce her to a friend group or meet her for something innocent. It looked exactly like someone who was testing whether another person was interested in him. I felt physically sick as I read it because the person writing those messages was the same man who had been telling me that he loved me.

I put the phone back exactly where I found it and didn’t say anything when he came out of the shower. I remember sitting there and trying to act completely normal while my mind was racing. He asked me what I wanted for dinner, and I almost started crying because the normality of his question felt surreal. Just minutes earlier, I had discovered something that could completely change our relationship, yet he was standing there talking to me like nothing had happened. I kept wondering whether he knew that I had seen the messages. I wondered if he had noticed me near his phone. I also wondered whether he was going to tell me himself. He didn’t. The entire evening passed without him mentioning anything.

That night, I barely slept. I kept replaying the conversation in my head. The biggest question wasn’t simply whether he wanted to go out with another woman. It was why he felt comfortable doing it while still being in a committed relationship with me. I started thinking about all the times he had told me that I was the person he wanted to be with. Had he meant those things? Was he unhappy with me? Had he already been considering leaving? Or was he simply looking for attention from someone else while keeping me around? I realized that I didn’t know the answers to any of those questions, and that uncertainty was incredibly painful.

Over the next few days, I began noticing things I had previously ignored. He had become more protective of his phone over the last several months. He sometimes turned the screen away when he was texting, and there were occasions when he would take his phone with him even when he was only going into another room for a few minutes. I had never thought much of it because I didn’t want to be the suspicious girlfriend who questioned everything. Now those little behaviors looked different. I started wondering whether they were connected to the woman I had discovered or whether there were other things happening that I didn’t know about.

I considered confronting him immediately, but I decided against it. I was too emotional and afraid that I would say something I regretted. More importantly, I wanted to understand what I was dealing with before making a decision. I didn’t want to accuse him of having a physical affair when I didn’t have proof of that. At the same time, I didn’t want to allow him to convince me that I had imagined what I saw. So I decided to take a step back and observe the situation while I figured out what I wanted to do.

During this period, I found myself becoming emotionally distant from him. I still cared about him, but I couldn’t look at him the same way. When he told me he loved me, I wondered whether he really meant it. When he made plans for our future, I wondered whether those plans were still real. I felt like I was carrying around a secret that was slowly changing everything between us. He didn’t seem to notice the difference, or if he did, he didn’t ask about it.

The strangest part was that I still had feelings for him. I wish I could say that discovering the messages immediately made me stop loving him, but that wasn’t what happened. Love doesn’t disappear simply because someone disappoints you. I still remembered the good things about our relationship. I remembered our first date, the trips we had taken, the holidays we had spent together, and all the ordinary moments that had made our relationship feel special. Those memories made leaving much harder.

At the same time, I realized that loving someone doesn’t automatically mean you should stay with them. Trust is an important part of a relationship, and he had damaged mine. Even if he had never physically cheated, he had crossed a boundary by pursuing another woman. He wasn’t single. He wasn’t confused about his relationship status. He knew exactly what he was doing. That realization made me question whether staying would eventually turn me into someone I didn’t want to become.

I began thinking about what would happen if I confronted him. I could already imagine the possibilities. He might apologize and say it meant nothing. He might claim they were just friends. He might accuse me of invading his privacy. He might even become angry that I had looked at his phone. I knew there was a possibility that the conversation would somehow turn into an argument about my actions instead of his. That was one of the reasons I wanted to be prepared before confronting him.

Eventually, I started making a private plan for leaving. I looked at my finances and thought about what I would need if we separated. I considered where I could stay and how I would handle our shared belongings. I wasn’t planning some dramatic revenge. I wasn’t trying to embarrass him or hurt him. I simply wanted to make sure I could walk away safely and calmly if that was what I decided to do. The more I planned, the more secure I felt.

But then I started feeling guilty about keeping these plans secret. I wondered whether I was being dishonest by secretly preparing to leave while continuing to live with him as though everything was normal. Part of me thought I should have confronted him immediately. Another part of me believed I had every right to take time to protect myself emotionally and financially before making a major decision. I didn’t know which side was right.

I also began questioning whether I was overreacting. He hadn’t actually gone on the date. As far as I knew, nothing physical had happened. Maybe I was allowing my imagination to make the situation worse than it really was. Maybe asking someone out was simply a stupid mistake that he would never repeat. But then I would remember the messages and realize that he had made multiple choices before reaching the point of asking her out. It wasn’t one accidental action.

What bothered me most was that he hadn’t told me he was unhappy. If he was having doubts about our relationship, I wish he had talked to me. We could have had an honest conversation about what was wrong. Maybe we could have worked through it. Maybe we couldn’t have. But at least I would have had the opportunity to make an informed decision about my own life. Instead, he had apparently decided to explore another option while keeping our relationship intact.

After several days of going back and forth in my mind, I finally decided that I needed to talk to him. I didn’t want to continue living with the secret. One evening, after dinner, I asked him to sit down with me because there was something serious we needed to discuss. He immediately noticed that something was wrong. I told him that I had seen the conversation on his phone and that I knew he had asked another woman out.

His expression changed instantly. For a few seconds, he didn’t say anything. Then he started explaining that it wasn’t what I thought. He said they had been talking casually and that asking her to get drinks didn’t mean he intended to cheat. He told me that he never actually met her and insisted that nothing happened between them. I listened to everything he said, but I couldn’t stop thinking about one simple fact: he had wanted the opportunity to meet her.

I asked him why he hadn’t told her that he had a girlfriend. He didn’t have a good answer. He eventually admitted that he had been enjoying the attention and had become curious about whether she would be interested in him. He said he had been feeling uncertain about our relationship and wanted to see what other possibilities were out there. Hearing that hurt more than I expected because it confirmed that this wasn’t an accidental misunderstanding.

I asked him whether he had been planning to leave me. He said no. He claimed that he loved me and that he had made a stupid decision without thinking about the consequences. He apologized several times and promised that he would stop talking to the woman. He said he didn’t want to lose three years of our relationship over one mistake. But I couldn’t help thinking that calling it “one mistake” made it sound much smaller than it actually was.

To me, the problem wasn’t only the message. The problem was the mindset behind it. He had apparently reached a point where he was comfortable exploring another romantic possibility without ending our relationship first. That meant I couldn’t simply erase what happened because he hadn’t gone on the date. The betrayal had already occurred. He had opened a door that should never have been opened while we were together.

He then asked me why I hadn’t confronted him immediately. When I told him that I had needed time to process everything and had secretly started preparing to leave, he became upset. He said that I had betrayed his trust by making plans behind his back. For a moment, I actually questioned myself. Was I being hypocritical? Was I accusing him of dishonesty while secretly planning my own exit?

After thinking about it, I realized that there was an important difference. I wasn’t secretly pursuing another relationship while staying with him. I wasn’t looking for someone else to replace him. I was preparing myself to leave because I no longer knew whether I could trust him. My plans weren’t about finding another person. They were about making sure I would be okay if I decided the relationship was no longer healthy for me.

Still, I understood why he felt hurt. From his perspective, discovering that I had already been planning my exit probably made him feel as though I had emotionally abandoned the relationship before giving him a chance to explain himself. But from my perspective, he had already created that uncertainty by pursuing another woman. I didn’t know whether I could believe his explanation, and I didn’t want to make a major decision based solely on his promises.

Since that conversation, things have been incredibly complicated. He has apologized and says he wants to rebuild my trust. He has offered to be more transparent with his phone and social life, and he says he understands that his actions were wrong. I appreciate the apology, but rebuilding trust isn’t something that happens overnight. Every time his phone buzzes, I still feel a little anxious. Every time he makes a plan without me, I wonder whether there is something I don’t know.

At the same time, I don’t want to spend the rest of my relationship monitoring him. I don’t want to become obsessed with checking his phone or tracking where he goes. That wouldn’t feel like a healthy relationship either. If I stay, I want to eventually trust him without needing constant proof. But I don’t know whether that is possible after what happened. Trust can take years to build and only moments to damage.

Some of my friends think I should leave immediately. They believe that if he was willing to ask another woman out once, he will eventually do it again. Others think I should at least give him an opportunity to prove that he made a genuine mistake. They remind me that people can make bad decisions and learn from them. I understand both sides, which is what makes this decision so difficult.

I also realize that there may never be a perfect answer. If I leave, I might always wonder whether I gave up on something that could have been repaired. If I stay, I might always wonder whether I’m ignoring a warning sign. Either choice comes with uncertainty. The only thing I know for certain is that the relationship I thought I had no longer exists in exactly the same way.

For now, I’m taking some time to think rather than making an immediate decision. I don’t want to stay simply because we’ve been together for three years, and I don’t want to leave simply because I’m angry. I want to decide based on whether I genuinely believe trust can be rebuilt and whether he is willing to take responsibility for what he did. At the same time, I’m glad I secretly prepared myself financially and emotionally because it reminded me that I can take care of myself regardless of what happens.

So now I’m asking: AIO for secretly planning to leave my boyfriend after I discovered that he was asking another girl out, even though he insists that nothing happened and that it was only a stupid mistake? Was I wrong for preparing my exit before confronting him, or was I simply protecting myself after realizing that the person I trusted was willing to look for another option while still being with me?
